This practicum is designed for educators and allied professionals who are interested in offering mindfulness to children & adolescents — to support youth in developing their natural capacities for focused attention, engaged learning, emotional fluency, respectful communication, and compassionate action. Together we will explore, in detail, the research-based Still Quiet Place curriculum.

During this interactive training participants will:

  • Either begin or continue their personal mindfulness practice for at least 30 minutes per day.
  • Review current research regarding the benefits of teaching mindfulness to children and adolescents.
  • Observe & discuss a ten-session curriculum for 4th-7th graders from beginning to end.
  • Explore & discuss skillful adaptations in language and practice to make mindfulness inviting and accessible to different age groups and populations.
  • Discuss the realities of offering mindfulness practices in classroom, therapeutic, and community settings.
  • Discuss the challenges faced when providing mindfulness instruction, including reluctance, resistance, or misunderstanding on the part of children, parents, and administrative leadership.
  • Review & reflect upon the essential qualities and qualifications for those interested in teaching mindfulness to children, and receive a framework for evaluating their own readiness to teach mindfulness to youth.
  • Discuss ideas for presenting/pitching a new mindfulness program in specific settings.

The Practicum Experience

The Still Quiet Place online practicum is an interactive experience delivered via a combination of online discussions with Dr. Amy and classmates from across the globe, readings from A Still Quiet Place: A Mindfulness Program For Teaching Children and Teens to Ease Stress and Difficult Emotions and videos of Dr. Amy teaching to 4th graders in an underserved community. Each student is required to maintain a daily personal practice for the duration of the practicum.

Teaching mindfulness to children is both a privilege and a responsibility. This course helped me shape my own practice into a form I can now present with confidence to kids. Dr. Amy, my peers, and I touched on everything from practical teaching techniques, to personal readiness, to the business side of teaching mindfulness. A very powerful course I experienced from the inside, out.  Course Participant
